Why Professional Locksmiths Must Verify Ownership First
In a previous article, we discussed how modern technology has made it possible for keys to be duplicated from photographs. Many people were surprised to learn that with the right tools and knowledge, a key can sometimes be measured, decoded, and recreated from a clear image.
Shortly after that article was published, a customer stopped by our shop in Frederick, Maryland with a question. They pulled out their phone and asked:
“Can you cut this mailbox key from a picture on my phone?”
The short answer is yes — sometimes a professional locksmith can originate a key from measurements or visual decoding.
However, there is something extremely important you need to understand.
A professional locksmith cannot and will not simply make keys from random photographs.
There are strict security procedures, legal responsibilities, and professional standards involved.
This article explains why those procedures exist and how professional locksmiths approach this type of request.
Locksmiths Don’t Just Make Keys — We Protect Security
Locksmiths hold a position of trust in the community. Our job is not simply cutting keys; it is protecting the security of homes, businesses, and property owners.
Think about it this way.
If a locksmith was willing to create keys for anyone who walked in with a random photo, that would create a serious security problem.
Imagine someone taking a picture of your house keys sitting on a table, then walking into a shop to get copies made.
That is exactly why professional locksmiths follow strict verification procedures before originating keys.
At Able Locksmiths, LLC, we require verification before performing services like key origination or lock decoding.
This may include:
• Government-issued identification
• Proof of property ownership or authorization
• Verification of address
• Access to the lock when necessary
These procedures protect homeowners, property managers, businesses, and the public.
Security always comes first.
Can a Locksmith Originate a Key Without the Original?
Yes — experienced locksmiths can sometimes originate keys using specialized techniques such as:
• Key decoding
• Measurement of key bitting
• Visual analysis of a key
• Impressioning
• Lock decoding at the cylinder
These are advanced locksmith skills developed through training and experience.
But they are not the same thing as duplicating a key.
Cutting a duplicate key from an existing working key might cost only a few dollars.
Originating a key without the original is a specialized locksmith service that requires:
• Professional training
• Locksmith decoding tools
• Experience with lock tolerances
• Time diagnosing and adjusting the lock
Because of this, it is normally billed as a locksmith service call or lock service, not a simple key copy.

A Traditional Locksmith Skill: “Sight Reading” a Key
Among locksmiths, the ability to visually decode a key is sometimes referred to as “sight reading.” It is a skill developed through experience, practice, and a deep understanding of how keys interact with locks.
At Able Locksmiths, LLC, this knowledge has been passed down through generations.
The owner of Able Locksmiths, Chris Christie, learned this technique from his father, who was also a professional locksmith. His father, Chester Christie, was known for his ability to quickly originate keys for vehicles using a classic locksmith tool known as a Curtis Clipper.
The Curtis Clipper is a mechanical key-cutting tool that is no longer manufactured and is now considered somewhat of an antique in the locksmith industry.
Using this tool, Chester could stand outside a vehicle, look through the window at the keys sitting on the seat, visually read the cuts of the key, and clip a new key directly at the vehicle.
On many older vehicles, this method could be just as fast as using traditional entry tools such as a slim-jim — while avoiding any risk of damage to the vehicle.
Over the years, Chris has continued refining this skill.
Today he can visually analyze many types of keys and produce working keys for a wide variety of locks, not just vehicles.
Some locks are easier than others. In certain cases the key may work on the first attempt, while more complex locks may require a few adjustments to achieve the proper fit.
When working directly at a lock, Chris often uses another classic locksmith tool known as a Pak-A-Punch, which allows precise keys to be cut based on decoded measurements.
These techniques are part of the traditional craft of locksmithing — skills developed through experience, training, and time in the field.

The Skill Behind Key Origination
Originating a key without an existing working key is considered an advanced locksmith skill.
It requires training, experience, and a deep understanding of lock mechanisms, key bitting systems, and tolerances.
At Able Locksmiths, LLC, this type of work is performed by highly trained professionals.
The owner of Able Locksmiths, LLC, along with several experienced technicians on our team, have the training and experience required to originate keys using professional locksmith techniques such as:
• decoding
• measurement
• impressioning
• sight reading
These skills are developed through years of hands-on work with locks and key systems.
They are not something that can be reliably performed by automated kiosks or inexperienced individuals.
When performed properly, key origination is a careful process that prioritizes both accuracy and security.
Why Locksmiths Often Need to Be at the Lock
Even when measurements can be taken from a key or photo, professional locksmiths usually prefer to service the lock directly.
There are several reasons for this.
-
Accuracy
-
Photos can distort measurements due to lighting, camera angle, or perspective.
-
Wear and Tolerances
-
Locks wear over time. Small adjustments may be required for the key to function smoothly.
-
Liability and Authorization
-
Being present at the lock helps confirm that the person requesting service is authorized.
-
Professional Results
Our goal is to provide a key that works smoothly and reliably — not one that only partially operates the lock. Working directly with the lock ensures the best outcome.
Photo Key Requests: Security and Verification Requirements
Occasionally, customers ask if we can originate a key from a photo.
In certain circumstances this may be possible using measurement techniques.
However, because of the security risks involved, Able Locksmiths follows strict requirements before even considering this type of request.
If those requirements cannot be met, we will not proceed.
These policies exist to protect homeowners, businesses, and property owners from unauthorized key duplication.
Photo Requirements for Key Measurement
Random photos of keys will not be accepted.
If a key photo is going to be considered for measurement, it must meet specific requirements.
The key must:
• be removed from the keyring
• be placed flat on a solid surface
• be photographed directly from above
• show both sides of the key
• clearly show the entire key blade in focus
Photos of keys that are:
• hanging from a keychain
• held in someone’s hand
• partially visible
• mixed among multiple keys
cannot be used for measurement. These types of photos are too easily taken without the owner’s knowledge.
If a photo does not meet these standards, the discussion about creating a key from a photograph ends and we will recommend an on-site locksmith service instead.
Ownership Must Always Be Verified
Even when a usable photo is provided, verification of authorization is still required.
This may include:
• Government-issued identification
• Proof of address
• Authorization from the property owner or property manager
• Access to the lock itself
Professional locksmiths have both an ethical and legal responsibility to prevent unauthorized entry.
At Able Locksmiths, we take that responsibility seriously.
Working With Law Enforcement
There are situations where law enforcement agencies may request locksmith assistance with key origination or lock access.
Able Locksmiths is always willing to assist law enforcement when appropriate.
However, when performing services of this nature, we require a formal request letter from the requesting department on official department letterhead.
This documentation allows us to maintain proper records of the request and ensures that all work performed is properly authorized should any questions arise later.
Maintaining accurate documentation protects everyone involved.
Lost Mailbox Key? Lost House Key? Here’s the Proper Solution
If you have lost the key to a mailbox, cabinet, or door lock, there are several professional solutions available.
These include:
• originating a key at the lock
• decoding the lock
• replacing the lock
• rekeying the lock to new keys
A professional locksmith can determine the most reliable and cost-effective solution once we examine the lock and verify authorization.
Often the safest approach is to service the lock directly.
Why Professional Locksmith Standards Matter
Unfortunately, not every person advertising locksmith services follows professional standards.
If someone is willing to create keys from random photos without verifying ownership, that should raise serious concerns.
A locksmith who ignores verification procedures is not protecting your security.
At Able Locksmiths, our policies exist to protect the community and ensure that locksmith services are performed responsibly.
